X blank screen

I am running redhat 9 and recently used apt-get to update everything on the machine from the initial installation. I know that i am now using Xfree86 4.3.

What happens is the machine starts up, but as soon as it loads into x, all i get is a blank screen. The same happens when I try startx from the command prompt. The system however still responsive. I can for instance press ctrl-alt-bcksp to get out of x and type reboot to restart the system. However even after exiting x, the screen is still blank.

I will gladly post any details or conf files you all will need. For now:
emachines 5312 laptop
radeon IGP 320 graphics

thanks!

post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file or any other log file that has XFree86 in it as i don't know if redhat has changed the name of the log file since rh 7.3.

the only things i saw were errors with the frame buffer. when you did apt-get, was there a kernel upgrade in there? you may need to install ati drivers that was compiled for that new kernel.

I dont believe a new kernel was installed, i checked and it's the same version as when I first installed red hat.

i'm relatively new to linux, what do i need to do correct this frame buffer prob? Also, referring to my initial post, i am aware that that particular chip isn't fully supported yet by red hat.

can you post your XF86Config-4 or XF86Config file? i think the rh9 uses the first file.

edit: you may also want to look this over. go to section 5.

how did you install the radeon driver? was it from the basic list that red hat provided? if it was go to that link i posted earlier to find out how to get the drivers from ati and look at the readme file for installing and configuring X. i'm sorry this isn't much help, but i don't have any experience with configuring ati cards in linux.

I got it working. When I did the update it must have overwritten the drivers for the radeon that I downloaded. I copied them back into the appropriate folder and tweaked the XF86Config and now it's back to normal.

Thanks for all your help though! Greatly appreciated.
