Using slackware 10.2 with kernel 2.6.13, on a hp pavilion zv5120us (zv5100 series) laptop...
I might have skipped a very basic thing, I'm not sure. any ideas are very welcome...
I am not sure whether this is a hardware or software issue. as mentioned in a previous thread I sent, kppp and pppd exit with NO CARRIER error after dialing w/ modem and communicating w/ remore modem.
wvdialconf just cannot find my modem.
my default boot option is acpi=noirq to stop laptop from disabling irq 5 (output of irq5 below). I also tried with acpi=off; acpi=off noapic; acpi=off noapic nohotplug. No success, same error.
I am posting some output that I think is somehow relevant. ANY ideas are welcome. I want to see my linux on the internet.
wvdialconf exits after scanning, saying that it could not get serial information from /dev/ttySL0. /dev/ttySL0 is set up by:
#modprobe snd-atiixp-modem
#slmodemd --alsa -c USA modem:1 (which sets up SL0)
please regard following info as "just in case you need more info on my system"
PLEASE let me know if you need more output.

slmodem drivers are buggy about "Carrier". You won't be able to use the carrier control... just add "Carrier Check = no" at the last line of your wvdial.conf script and you will be fine
subject: wvdialconf won't recognize modem.
that's why I can't use wvdial...
Somehow rude... I use wvdial with that modem and it does work, believe me or not. If it cannot find the modem you are probably doing someting wrong... but it doesnt matter as wvdialconf can't configure this one (it will hang). Scrap wvdialconf it does, and will, fail on this modem. Find a sample of config on google and write it yourself by hand. And don't forget to add the option I told you earlier.
I tried with a sample wvdial.conf file. it says it could not get the serial info of /dev/ttySL0 (where my modem is linked to according to slmodemd).
any other ideas?

new info: the modem worked with ubuntu 5.04, no problems. I did not do anything different so there was no errors on my part.
Now I am trying to get a hold on the ubuntu kernel source and the .config file that it uses in order to find out whether this is a kernel issue.
Also,

sorry, didn't mean to be.
imho the problem is in the kernel...i've got pavillion zx5000 series, with ATI IGP AC97 souncard, (i think is the same for you), and i've never got problems with slack. but in 10.2 i'm unable to get the sound subsystem working, (there's no ALSA drivers in the vanilla slackware kernel)...both with 2.4, (default) and 2.6.13 branches!
soundcard and modem are linked at hardware level, so, maybe, the problem could be this...have you got your soundcard working?!
i apologize to have doubted about Holy Slackware...installed 2.6.13 from packages in the 'kernels' dvd directory, and now all is so smooth, as usual since slackware 7.0 :P
bye!

my sound is (sorry, was) working in Slackware 10.2... I remember something like doing alsaconf or something similar...

lol
that's lucky for you I guess. My modem is still not working with any distro except Ubuntu (5.04 AND 5.10 now)...
I still have no idea why and I could not figure out how to duplicate (exactly) the ubuntu kernel (with its configs and modules) on Slackware. I'm just too newbie to do that I guess...
May be Slackware 11.0 will like my modem?? Well, at least (AND hopefully) Ubuntu will continue to like my modem even after 6.04 release (and others)...
it wasn't luck, it was all about the kernel...the default kernel 2.4.13 in slackware 10.2 doesn't contain ALSA subsystem...you have to download a 2.6 kernel and recompile your kernel with alsa enabled.
once you've rebooted with your brand new kernel, as r00t just type "alsamixer", then set your volume levels, and then "alsactl store" to save your settings...that's all folks! :P
p.s.: if you got your modem working with ubuntu, then you should do the same with slackware...you just have to try...try...try...try...
p.p.s.: i've got your same exact modem, (#1: ATI IXP Modem rev 1 at 0xe8003400, irq 5), workin' on slackware 10.2...just follow this howto http://website.lineone.net/~bryanrpo...ixp-modem.html!
i've got 2.6.13 monolithic, (without modules, i don't like them), kernel, and the vanilla slackware distro. you'll need slmodemd, and nothing more. the only issue i've got is that when i use my modem, i can't use the soundcard , but, at least, it goes very well and answer all ATI commands. However, when you kill slmodemd daemon, your soundcard will goes again well.
once you've installed, just use those two scripts:
modemup:
# To enable modem
/usr/sbin/slmodemd --alsa hw:0 --country=IT & (in your post i've seen you haven't used the modem name "--alsa hw:0", you've just left --alsa)
ln -sf /dev/ttySL0 /dev/modem
echo "modem set up completed..."
and modemdown:
# To disable modem
killall -9 slmodemd
echo "modem is now off..."
IMPORTANT! don't follow that section:
Quote:
6) Automate the process upon each boot.
(i) SuSE - Add the following lines to /etc/rc.d/boot.local.
(ii) Slackware - Add the following lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
(iii) Mandrake - Add the following lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.local.

Hey, this is great. Thanks so much! I will save this somewhere and try once I go back to my "Slackware" mode No, seriously, I have a Slackware mode that comes from time to time like a period...
It's interesting - I compiled a kernel with my slackware as well but didn't work. I probably did something wrong
Oh by the way, if you get sick of non-working-sound-while-modem-is-up, ubuntu makes both work at the same time... U may wanna give the live cd a try w/ the precompiled (pre) slmodemd
