WVDial: Dial-up succeeds, but can't get anywhere
 
I have a Slackware 10 machine which I intend to use as a firewall. Our ISP only provides dial-up service, so I've installed wvdial in an attempt to manage my internet connection. The modem is a U.S. Robotics PCI modem model 2976 - a hardware modem known to work under Linux. wvdial did a great job identifying my modem and determining its top speed. It also seems to be doing just fine dialing out, contacting my ISP, recognizing my ISP's prompts, providing a username and password, and receiving my IP address and the IPs of my DNS servers. Sounds great, right?

I was thrilled right up until I tried to -use- the connection. Once everything's up, I can't connect to anything. I can't reach Google and I can't ping the DNS servers I was issued. I can't even use dig; everything times out.

I found an article mentioning that, under Slackware 10, wvdial writes to /etc/ppp/resolv.conf and reads from /etc/resolv.conf. I replaced /etc/resolv.conf with a symbolic link to /etc/ppp/resolv.conf in an effort to fix this but, as I suspected, this wasn't my problem. I can't get anywhere, name resolution or not.

I really appreciate any help anyone can give with this one. I don't know my way around Linux when it comes to dial-up connections; I'm used to having DSL at my disposal. My current solution is to use a Windows 2000 box I have available for shared dial-up, but I imagine you can see why I want to get away from that. :)
