writing cd & dvd

Hi

Env : Mandrake 10.1 kernel 2.6.8.1-12mdk
Hw dvd nec 2540a and dvd TSSTcorp CDW/DVD SH-M522C

i'm not new to linux ....

now i'm a lot confused about cd and dvd writing
i buy good quality cd and dvd rewritable but it happens they are giving error when try to read the
just written data.
this happens when writing iso images....

my confusion is:
some time ago there wad cdrecord and sons.......
so if i have a problem i will update firmaware and
the cdrecord &C. packages...

now there are cdrecord....cdrecord clones cdrkit
i see als o a version of nero burning for linux (not free)...

what i want to achive is
1) reliabilty of software
2) then if it is possible opens source or free software

questions:
in order
1)what are your opinion about the above software what kind/version to use to achieve the above listed targets.. ?
2)where i can find if the above software supports my dvd drives ?

any opinion ,any suggestion is very very well appreciated..i'm tired to have bad media

thanks in advance

Maurizio

cdrecord or wodim is fine for writing cd and dvd disc.
Try googling for any patches for your drive.

You may be using physical media incompatible with the drive. One of the first things I do with mysterious CD/DVD burning problems is try a different brand of media. The situation with incompatible media is getting less and less, but it still exists.

Try burning at a lower speed. Also, with many drives you have to eject the disk and reinsert it if you want it to recognize and read the disk. Also know that you cannot mount audio CDs if that's what you're trying to do.
