Write access denied in Vi

Last night one of my pets walked on my keyboard while I was editing a file in the vi editor. Ever since then I have not been to write to any files. I am able to write to files as root but not as a regular user. I really don't remember what keys were pressed.

How can I get write access back on my user acount for the vi editor?

Best advice I can offer: Try to write to a file as user. If write fails, then check the permissions. If user doesn't have permission, then su to root and change the permissions to allow user to write.

Since the permissions changes were random (a pet walking across the keyboard), the solution will have to be random as well.

Of course, you can also try to write a bash, python, or perl script to search for file access and change dates which have changed recently.

most likey, you somehow accidently changed the permissions of the files in question. if they are suppsed to owned by users, log in as root and do

chown user file

if you still cant edit it, chmod it 777.

one of thoes has gotta do it for ya
