wpa_supplicant Spends Long Time Assiociated and Group_Handshake

I use wpa_supplicant to connect to my wireless network, but in order to dhcpcd it, I need the status to be Completed, so I check with `wpa_cli status` or wpa_gui, but the problem is it often takes more than 5 minutes to cycle through Associated and Group_Handshake before the connection is completed. Is there something I'm not telling it to do which I should? or is my connection just really slow? I dual boot on windows and I'm able to connect in seconds, so I'm guessing I just need to tell it to do something.
