WMV and .MKV files play back problem.

Hi all,
I have installed ubuntu 11.04 and i have some .wmv and .mkv files (video songs) i tried to play them, i was getting error that gstreamer ugly is not available so cant play the file. Now i have downloaded the gstreamer ugly from synaptic and the video works really well. But the audio is not audible.! I get only very faint sound and the sound is just something like bird chirping all time.! How can i solve this ? Should i download any codec?

Try installing gstreamer-plugins-bad as well. If that doesn't work, you could always just install VLC.

It could be the video itself with bad audio and not necessarily the codecs. Are you having this problem with all videos that are in .wmv and .mkv format? Does your audio work ok for other applications like watching a video on youtube?

Try installing ubuntu-restricted-extras

http://www.ihaveapc.com/2011/04/how-...whal%E2%80%99/

That might not do it either, there are some dodgy wmvs around that are basically spyware. They work on WMP (possibly other media players on windows) but not linux, no matter what you do....AFAIK anyway. Its also possible to do the same trick with mkv files as well. I havent heard of any getting around, but I dont pay much attention to that sort of thing.

Not that I think your mkv or wmv files have been spywared, but its always worth mentioning.

*edit- could be DRM problems as well. DRMed files can be a right pain to impossible to play with linux.
