WMA files in Kaffiene and Xine

ok just got Linux on for first time :) no windows anymore :) Using SUSE 9.2 Pro.

Trying to play a WMA file with above mentioned progs and have got all the windows codecs from the mplayer site and put them in /usr/lib/win32 folder but they both still refuse to play wma files.....any ideas?

hi,

noticed you're using SuSE 9.2... As I remember from my SuSE days, the 'standard' Xine / Kaffeine shipped with the distro is rather crippled and it won't even see any of the plugins that you've (correctly) put in /usr/lib/win32.

Solution is to completely uninstall SuSE's Xine and go to packman.de (can't remember the exact URL - do a google) and install versions to be found there.. You'll also find lots of other SuSE goodies!

Whilst I prefer xine for DVD playback, I have found that MPlayer seems to offer better support for the various video / audio formats, and the browser plugin works very well, too. You might want to look into it, but having said that, you shouldn't have any problem getting xine going with wma / wmv files once you've got a decent version on your system....

Edit -

Remove all xine components, but leave noatune (and kaffiene if you wish) on the box (tell YaST to ignore the dependency issues)

go to rpmfind, rpmbone, or any other RPM repository and download/install the following:

libdvdcss-1.2.8-2.network.i386.rpm
w32codec-0.52-1.i386.rpm
libxine1-1_cvs-041119.i686.rpm
xine-mozilla-plugin-0.2-041119.i586.rpm
xine-ui-0.99.2cvs-041119.i586.rpm

Once all of the above are installed, you'll be able to play most formats, including wmv, wma, and of course encrypted DVDs.

have added packmans site to YAST.....its installed MPlayer and it gets me further than i got before Xine now says something about having no demuxer plugin and mplayer gives me lovely wma video baby!!!! :)

so mplayer is OK, you've also updated / replaced xine but it's throwing a 'demuxer plugin' tantrum, yes?

possibility is it's looking in the wrong place for the plugin, though i doubt it because you've got them installed in the default location. it might be worth checking the xine config file, which should now include a section telling it where to look for the win32 codecs....

yes that right kev....so can i just edit this config file if needs be like i would have in windows with a text editor?

Just configure it from the xine preferences menu.

Try using xine 1.0 packages from xine's website or the nightly builds from xine's nightly builds page. I think I had similar problem a while ago and a simple upgrade solved the problem.
