LinuxQuestions.org - wireless_tools and modprobe: Can't find module eth1

i installed wireless_tools today to try and connect to my uni wlan. i had the same machine with man 9.1 that connected to the wlan without any config changes at all! as usual, man refugee, didn't actually know how wlan worked as Man did it all for me. assumed vector would work the same way but didn't.

I installed wireless_tools but then, while reading the wireless howto (at Vector Linux ) I realised i needed to remove the four lines from wireless.opts (see bottom)

this i did and without needing to use wireless_tools to change any settings my card now connects to the uni wlan

BUT here are my confusing problems after i installed wireless_tools:

In netconfig I was using loopback on my box to manage my network.

I don't usually connect to a network although I have a combined eth/modem pcmcia (eth0) and an ma401 (eth1).

The only time i use my nic is to connect to a broadband router when i am at my parents home (i change netconfig to use DHCP and it works great) and i also needed to use DHCP to connect to the uni wlan. if i try to boot with DHCP (when NOT using the router and not at uni) it just sits there trying to connect to a network (?) on eth1 and i have to use ctrl+c to continue boot.

i use my modem to connect to the web 90% of the time. netconfig suggests i use loopback for this and this HAD been working great, it wasn't trying to connect to any networks and the machine started up nice and fast. BUT after i installed wireless_tools when booting it now tries to connect to a network on eth1 using an IP address that i didn't supply and i get errors like:

modprobe: Can't find module eth1

i have no idea what has happened here - i readily admit that i don't understand the networking aspects of linux and i'd appreciate any help!

secondly, my machine now connects to the uni wlan (the green light on the card is not blinking and gkrellm shows the wlan signal etc) but i cannot use it. our wlan is set up to only allow access to ONE https site from which you can connect to the student desktop using citrix. now, my citrix client works, i can browse to the site using my modem and connect to the desktop fine but when i try to use my browser to access the site when connected to the wlan it can't find it. I believe this is because i need to change resolv.conf, which is using my dial up settings but i dunno what to change them to.

i really want to understand this stuff as i will be using this more and more. appreciate any help at all.

a word of advice as well - before installing anything extra to *connect* to a WLAN in Vector, try removing the 4 lines in /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts that allow you to use the sample set ups provided. I'm almost certain that these samples would have fixed my problem but i just made myself a bigger one instead
