Question winXP + RedHat9 + Grub = can't Upgrade Windows

hi all
i have 2 operating systems on my pc
the first is linux redhat 9 and the other is windows xp sp2
the boot loader is Grub (from linux)
everything was just fine
untill i had a problem with my windows xp
i needed to format it and to reinstall it
but i cant because the boot loader is Grub
and each time i try to boot from windows cd .. it does that successfully but after a while ... the pc just turns off
my proposed explanation is that maybe when the windows cd tries to add entries to the boot loader in the installation process it fails because it is not windows based ..

any help is appreciated

thanks

OK--you boot from the Windows install disk. What exactly happens??---ie at what point in the process does the computer shut off?

No....the Windows installer is quite single-minded. It will not attempt to set up the boot loader for other OSes, nor will it do anything with GRUB. It simply installs its own bootloader.
(It might detect other versions of Windows, but I have never done that.)

If this DOES have something to do with GRUB being in the MBR, then you can simply remove it using dd. But let's get the details first on where exactly things are going wrong.

When you install Windows, it replaces GRUB with its own bootloader. You can reinstall GRUB from a live CD or from your installed Linux ( if you can get to it). I don't think RH 9 comes on a Live CD, but the CD may allow to to boot into the installed Linux.

This might be the time to install a more modern version of Linux--RH9 is quite obsolete. If you like Redhat then maybe try Fedora 7.

For more on booting and GRUB, see the link below.
