winxp+linux =>boot problems

I got windows xp and mandrake 9.0 on my new sytem working perfectly. But then I decided to buy the same system for my wife. So I got two identical machines. For the second machine I just wanna copy the winxp (got the license) image over the win32 partition. I try it using tar but it seems that winxp doesn't wanna boot at all on the new machine. I did it this way cause I used win98 before and everythig was just fine using the same method. I can fix the boot with fixboot but I wonder if there is something I can modify in lilo.conf - or smth else - so I don't have to run fixboot everytime and I install the system.
Thank you.
