wineX stuff

just wondering if winex is worth the download. what is it capable of? i'm looking for a windows emulator. i want to run games as well as adobe photoshop. all i';ve found so far over the net is transgaming, but that has a subscription and seems kinda buggy. are there any other emulators out there capable of running gameslike counterstrike? any info would be most appreciated

I'd say it is worth of downloading if you want to run windows games, currently I am running Max Payne.

I played all of Jedi Knight II using winex, and got better fps than windows!

the sound playback during the cut-scenes was a little wacked though...

i wanna see how good it is before im willing to pay $50 for a years worth of updates.........

i am new to linux but was wondering if I can load and install my windows games on a 'pure' linux system. I have heard about wine and winex but unsure if they allow you to install the game onto the hard drive or just run
please help me convert to linux

You can download the CVS tree for free, but you got to compile it yourself. If you want the prepackaged stuff you need to subscribe.

Nope. Not on a "pure" Linux system. And with regards to WineX... I think it deserves a nice HOWTO...

so how does the linux community play the lastest game releases, if the game developers only create on the windows os. I have asked westwood but they rudely informed me that the min requirement for there games was windows 98 ( no good for me )

Winex user

I currently use winex. I decided to give it a try because I was tired of having to boot into windows to play games (which I do often). So far I have used it to play BG2:Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal and have found that it works perfectly. To give a little setup, I have both of these installed in my linux environment. They are not loaded in windows at all. I have found that winex is a nice way to play games under linux.

thanks for the reply but the next question is ... where do i get winex from.

:D

http://www.transgaming.com/

That is the link to their main webpage, you can also find it in sourceforge.net

But if you want packages then you got to subscribe to winex, otherwise you have to download the CVS, and compile yourself.

I downloaded it from CVS and compiled successfully, but when I try to start up it gives

wine: Symbol `Dosvm' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking
I am now considering upgrading some libraries (like glibc), but I'm not sure if that will help.

Is there some way of finding out in which shared object "Dosvm" is located?

I found out by using ldd on the wine executable that the problem was caused by old left-over libraries from a previous wine installation. They happened to be in /usr/lib while the new ones were in /usr/local/lib.

But if someone can tell me, I'd still like to know if it is possible to search shared libraries for a certain symbol and if so, how?
