wine problems

I've tried to install wine, it used to work fine, I'm not sure what I have changed to make it no longer work, but this is what happens if I try to run it.

wine: creating configuration directory '/home/brett/.wine'...
wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x003ffd80 at address 0x609643af (thread 0009), starting debugger...

wine: wineprefixcreate failed while creating '/home/brett/.wine'.

err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x6000b3a3
err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x6000b3a3
wineserver: could not save registry branch to /home/brett/.wine-BRK4Ic/system.reg : No such file or directory
wineserver: could not save registry branch to /home/brett/.wine-BRK4Ic/user.reg : No such file or directory

I don't think that's enough information to determine the problem, but where should I look to find out, is there a log file or anything I can check. I'm running slackware 10.2 and I compiled wine from source. I've also tried installing a slackware package of it with the same results.

Dude, I'm having the exact same problem! I did exact same thing (install from source). Hmm, wonder what's wrong.

There was a thread about this on the
usenet group comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine
on Aug 20th, and a long thread about it on
the Puppy Linux forums, for what it's worth.
Someone there reported that wine-0.9.18 didn't
have the problem.
If you find out more, or for more help,
please post to the wine-users mailing list at winehq.org.

I think I had the problem with 9.18,9.19, and just tried 9.20 and have the same problem. It used to work fine with I believe 9.18 and then it just got screwed up one day.

On Ubuntu I had to install GTK 1.2 first.

1.2? Thats really old isn't it? Why would you need that?

I know there is something wrong with my system, I have errors when trying to compile alot of programs, I don't know how to find out what I'm missing, or is installed wrong though, ./configure never gives me any errors that I can see.

So how would I go about installing two different versions of GTK? How will wine know which one to use?
