Unhappy Wine install problems

Problem solved. I was chmoding the wrong side of the permissions.

Thanks for the response.

sounds like your installing it as root, which is a no no when it comes to wine...and just for the record, what distro are you using?

I d/l'd the latest dist from WineHQ and I am using Red Hat 9. OS.

I am installing under my user account, but not in root. The wine install does an su make install to get around the required root privlages, but regardless of how I set the attributes on the directory mentioned, I either get permission denied, or only user can access this directory messages and the portion of wineinstall that sets up the registry fails.

I'm new to Linux, and am probably doing some stupid newbee mistake, but nevertheless, I want to learn how to do it right.

Hope this is a better description of my problem

Thanks
Alan

It seems now though that the wineinstall program is looking for a socket. It seems that at this point there is stuff missing that wineinstall is looking for. Should I have done something else first and is there a way to manually set things up to finish the installation?
