Unhappy wine doesn't work for me

i downloaded the source to Wine (the latest one), read the manual which said to do this:
./configure
make depend
make
make install (as root)

it compiled everything (took ilke 20 minutes) then installed the stuff. i tried to run a windows exe file and it gives errors that a ton of stuff is not working properly then the console window dies.
i also tried the method it said of "./tools/wineinstall" but that didn't work either.

Mandrake 8.2, any clue what's wrong?

yes, wine is not perfect, and doesn't work that well. that's what it does. look around on their site for information on specific applications

there's a big difference between installing wine and doing the 1000+ tweaks to it (and your system) to get it to run anything properly. after all these years of development it's still almost useless. your best bet is to ask your friend how he did it.

no need to ask, i was there when he built it. he downloaded it, read the manual then did the configure, make depend, make, make install. i was with him when he did it.

we're both big fans of Linux so doing the simplest thing is somewhat interesting (windows backgrounds, both of us)

there's a utilily on winehq.org called winecheck, running that will might help point out any config. issues.

here is the error i get when i try to run ANY program from the CD ROM:
Warning: L"/mnt/cdrom/SETUP.EXE" not available from configured DOS drive
wine: cannot find 'mnt/cdrom/SETUP.EXE'

me thinks i'm running Wine as DOS......how can i change it? where are the Wine config files? the included documentation doesn't say. where does it put the majority of the files?

it should be dropped in your home directory somethig like .wine/wine.conf or something similar, also loof for it in /root most probably there is a global config file there. As for building wine that comes from transgaming CVS tree you need to run tools/wineinstall script from within wine directory
[root@host wine] ./tools/wineinstall

it doesn't let you, i tried that the first time. it always says "this is not advisable, killing processor" then it dies. you have to run it as a normal user

Was it wine or winex you tried? I have Mandrake 8.2 and I downloaded winex 2.01 (I guess) via CVS. I cant run anything unless I run it using winelauncher. When I try to run eg winword using wine /mnt/windows.../winword.exe it fails. But when I use winelauncher it works (winelauncher /mnt/windows.../winword.exe). If you are using winex, try this one.
