wine cant connect to internet

Having a load of problems with wine, so here we go:

Im trying to install steam with wine I have read several Howto's and they all point out that IE is required.
However whatever method i choose things go wrong when the installer try's to download the cab files. I have used the install-ie6.sh and wine ie6setup.exe.

with te sh installer i get: "thunkConnect32 failure" several times, then it reports it cant connect to the internet.
the exe doesn't give the thunk thing but the same "cant connect to internet" message.

also tried installing the cabs manualy. downloaded them of a ftp server somewhere, extracted the contens to Windows/Sytem and de IEXPLORE.EXE to Program Files/Internet Explorer.
dont think that worked either becouse IE won't run

Steam also claims it can't connect to the internet, i copied the steam dir from a winbox to the .wine/c/Program Files dir.
getting the rsabase.dll error, this means installing IE right?

now im guessing that wine has a problem connecting to internet. i have a dsl modem/router wich is connectet to a wireless router/switch. do i need to configure wine for that?

pfff.. this may be a lot to ask. but Im realy stuck here.

I actualy got steam running under Linux,

not with wine though. its not made for running games, wineX is.

just install wineX from cvs.
I did a search on this very forum and found a script that downloads, configures and installs the thing. its called GetCVSWineX

you can download a binary or rpm also, its better and more stable but they charge you for it.

i had to install the tahoma font, but other than that it worked.

I hope you have a fast pc though, performance still doesnt come close to running it on windows.
