wine and outlook 2000

I have installed wine on rh 8.0 and need some assistance installing outlook 2000. What is the best way to install outlook 2k using wine? I've never used wine before and am confused about the install process using wine. Thanks

DrOzz 07-02-2003 02:56 PM

well since outlook 2k comes with office 2k i will just give you a tutorial on installing office2k with wine...
office 2k wine installation

zuessh 07-02-2003 03:38 PM

That helps, however it says that IE is not supported and from what I understand outlook 2k will not run without IE. Any other docs or suggestions? Anyone know if Office XP will run on wine yet? Thanks

IE 5

IE 5.5

IE 6

Im getting an error that D:/Office1.cab doesnt exist, however it is there. I mounted the cd with
mount -t iso9660 -o unhide /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
I am assuming it can not see the file, any suggestions?

DrOzz 07-03-2003 12:37 PM

well i know when that happens then it is a bad copy, so leads me to believe that you have that copy burnt that your trying to load right?

zuessh 07-03-2003 12:59 PM

Its actually a MS Select cd and its office 2k premium.

And it gives me the same error if I copy the cd to the local drive and attempt to install.

Maybe my problem is with the installation of IE, from the office setup? I tried ie5 by itself following the link from the post above, all went well except it told me I have a newer version of dcom. Below is what I get when I attempt to intall IE 5

Any suggestions?

Please ignore last post, I installed IE from the cd and it worked, when I attempted to install outlook it knew IE was installed but I still get the same office1.cab not found. Thanks for any help.

DrOzz 07-03-2003 11:27 PM

well i dont' know if you have any other sources, but is there any way you could get a hold of another copy of office to see if actually that will be a reoccuring error, or if its the cd?

born4linux 07-04-2003 07:08 AM

i sent out this guide to someone before:

MS Office 2000 Professional
- Go to "Install"
- get the install-demo from codeweavers.com

- /mnt/cdrom/linux/install-crossover-office-2.0.0-demo.sh
- choose "I Agree"
- install path
/opt/cxoffice
- Install Options
check "CrossOver Office for Linux
- Begin Install
- Main Menu > CrossOver > Office Setup
- press OK for the evaluation prompt
- Welcome Screen hit "Next"
- setup your proxy ifyou want then hit "Finish"
- Go to "Install"
- Select MS Office 2000 then hit "Next"
- select your source path then hit "Next"
- once the MS office install screen appears, just
reply tothe prompts.
- once the installation has finished (no reboot! :D)
u can access outlook via Main Menu >
Windows Applications > Programs > Microsoft Outlook
- The wizard should guide u for the mail setup
- I've installed MS Office 2000 Professional, not sure if other
versions have the same set of programs/behaviour during
startup but here's what I have for the "Email Service Options"
- Internet Only
- Corporate or Workgroup
- No E-mail
- I chose "Corporate or Workgroup" to connect to our MS exchange server
- In the next screen, I have the options "Microsoft Exchange Server" and "Internet
E-mail". I marked the first one. then "Next"
- The next dialog, I need to provide the MS exchange server nad themailbox name (here,
I used the IP address instead of the netbios name).
- After that, I'm asked for the username, domain name and password.
- To add the functinal mailboxes, go to:
Tools > Services > Properties (for MS exchange) > Advanced tab > Add

(i have some screenshots of the install process for RHL 9 if you want.)

hth.

coz not all linux email clients provide the features outlook offers to access services from an MS exchange server

or, simply say, they (like me) are trapped/forced to use an MS exchange server for the company email.

same goes for internet explorer - there are some sites out there that **refuses** to work properly when your browser is not IE.

DrOzz 07-04-2003 03:24 PM

well lets put it this way...there is stuff that owns up to outlook and as of the site thing...i know in the konqueror web browser under tools you go to browser identification and you can make it "act" like any browser you wish...
ranging from IE 4.0 to 6.0 and mozilla, netscape and opera...so your not cornered into using these microsoft based programs...theres most likely always a way around these things...which i pointed out that there is in these both cases.
and actually heres a quote:

Quote:

For email, there's no Outlook Express or Outlook for Linux. You will have to turn to something else. If you use Outlook Express, you may like Kmail which is similar to Outlook Express. If you're an Outlook user, you're probably better to go withEvolution which is the equivalent of Oulook under Linux with email, calendar, Microsoft Exchange compatibility and more...
........so there ya have it

bigmember 07-04-2003 04:34 PM

just get ximian evolution. it looks like outlook, acts like outlook and has most of the same features. ximian.com is where to go. I can barely get outlook 2000 to run properly on windows 2000. I wouldn't even dream of trying to get it running on linux!!

For a total office solution, I would go with Open Office or Star Office. There is a free version of star office on planet mirror that is a self installing *.bin file. Open Office is always free.
