Hey. I have now installed Kubuntu on my computer because my Windows ME was starting to run bad and was becoming more and more obsolete by the microsecond. Anyway since I have installed Kubuntu I am now running into a series of problems; some of which have been solved prior to me moving to a more appropriate thread.
Although I like to call myself somewhat of a computer nerd, I am fresh of the windows train and need some help with linux so it would be nice if you could help.
Thanks A Lot!!
Solved:
1.) Installing WINE
2.) Backgounds
3.) Finding things installed with wine
4.) Installing Sun Java

1.) WINE & XP - Part of my switching to Kubuntu was my computer couldn't run certain things. I tried to install Windows Live messenger. It did not work because it said i needed xp or beter. I did install internet explorer 6 however. This leads me to believe that obviously it is the emulator making these things work, not my OS. Is there a version of wine that acts like an XP emulator? as far as i know i got the newest version (0.9.30) Fresh off winehq. Is anyone running any programs with wine that would otherwise require windows xp to run? If so how do i get that version. Maybe i havent installed wine 0.9.30 or maybe it just doesnt do that.... Let me know.
(ps i know there are other versions of chat things but having MSN is more convinient seeing as how everyone i know has windows; and having msn as well makes the features available to me like file sharing etc. lol)
2.) Icons - Can you change icons? i got a bunch of gear icons i would like to change.
3.) If i cant run iTunes, whats a good program to play and edit my iPod with?
(ps. im currently going through kubuntu tutorials etc. so ill ask some real simple questions lol.)

1.) I cannot drop my backgrounds into the wallpapers file to get those backgrounds (which i downloaded) into the wallpaper selection. I tired pulling a windows and finding where the wallpapers were located, going there, and adding in my own personal backgrounds. I cannot do that. How do i change this or how can i load my backgrounds?
Where did you save them to, and what filetype are these wallpapers? Can you see them with the file manager?
2A.) Wine 0.9.30 is the latest version, so you won't be able to find a newer version anywhere. Wine does its best to reproduce the Win32 APIs, but can't be expected to run every Windows app. You obviously do have wine properly installed or you wouldn't be able to run Windows programs at all.

2B- FINDING WINE - OK i have as mentioned installed a couple things via wine. now i cannot fine them or wine to open them. How do i use thing things i installed with wine?
Things you installed with wine should either show up in a 'Wine' folder in your K menu, or you can find them manually in /home/<username>/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/
To simply run something with wine, type in a terminal 'wine whatever.exe'.
Where did you save them to, and what filetype are these wallpapers? Can you see them with the file manager?
They are saved to a folder on my desktop. They are .jpg and i can see them when I open the folder. Its the picture not just a file logo if thats what you mean.
Thanks for the other help.
BUT: lol always a but it seems
1) When i try to oepn internet explorer (one of the things i installed) it does nothing.
2.)Does wine read windows XP stuff?

Regarding the wallpapers: how are you trying to set the wallpaper? The easiest way is to right-click on the desktop, click 'configure desktop', and click the little 'folder' icon next to the dropdown list to select the file you want to use as your wallpaper. Could you clarify your situation?

IE6 won't work out of the box with wine because it needs extra dll files. Google 'wine internet explorer' for about a billion tutorials on doing that.

Wine is theoretically supposed to be able to fully implement the Windows API including WinXP features, but isn't perfect. Short answer: yes. There's a database of what programs do and do not work with Wine here: http://appdb.winehq.org/
Yea thanks sumguy231.. man uve been helpful.. anyway i just figured out the desktop thing. i just right click them and go to set as background lol... thats like windows.. duh. anyway. they are now sitting in their own wallpapers file in a my documents folder i made for all my pictures and stuff.... im still a little windows minded lol.

This isn't all that related, but if you're running Firefox in Kubuntu I highly recommend the KDEFF theme and the Konquefox extension, but of which make Firefox look and act more like Konqueror, KDE's web browser. This essentially means that it will look less out of place in KDE. Also check K -> System Settings -> Appearance -> Gtk Styles and Fonts. Setting 'GTK styles' to 'Use my KDE style...' will make Firefox and many other applications look much better.

It's not a Windows mentality thing, per se, all the Linux users I know (including myself) make folders in their home directories for pictures, music, videos, etc. It saves you a lot of headache in the long term. I'm a bit of a neat freak when it comes to my filesystem.
If you do need to run programs in wine, run 'winecfg' and you can set there which version of windows to emulate. You can also control many other settings like which dlls a program will use - native or wine's built in versions.
i got this other thread going which started like a what linux is best for me(thead 1)... and later changed to another help thing.. check it out too... man im doing ok some serious multi threading.. people are gonna get mad lol....
those are the only two.. any others ive left... well that pretty much means a windows vs kubuntu (thread 2) and a wine and other problems (thread 3 - my crossthread that annoyed some people ). so check out these ones
Thread 1 (Which Linux OS is best for me)
&
Thread 4 (Current one) check em out... help me out..
hey thank for the winecfg thing that was amazing. i was able to change it to xp and install windows live messenger.. one of the core things i wanted. im going to try my itunes cd now since i didnt really like amarok...
i am having one problem tho.. i although installed i cannot run it. How do you run it? also i though there should be a wine folder in my k menu.. if there is its not there..

I suggest using Gentoo if you want more freedom. I recommend using other desktop/window manager because KDE and GNOME are very bloated. Please state directories as directories instead as folders.
There are several programs in Linux that has similar features to Windows Live messenger. I use GAIM.
I suggest loading up WINE's regedit and import the registry file that Wine Tools provides. This will get most programs to load with little trouble. I do not recommend using WINE for saving data for production. I suggest backing up the files before opening them up while using WINE. I recommend using VMware for production because it is more reliable and stable.

Gentoo is good but 'freedom' is overrated. I left over the hours it took simply to compile and install certain packages. But that's my opinion. If you like Kubuntu, good. If you don't, try some different distributions and use whatever you like best.
it seems most of your issues were touched on already except the itunes one. i'm currently running itunes with wine 0.9.30, so it isn't too hard to get it working. You can also use amarok, gtkpod to get your music to your ipod. I remember there was a app called pymusique or something like that a while back that you could use to purchase music from the itunes store.
I chose "not for all the things I want" for my vote.
There is one program I really want to run that requires Internet Explorer. I don't want to install IE at all, but wish there was something in WINE that could "spoof" its existence. I am so not double-booting into Windows (long story why not).
Some of the simpler programs that I expected to run on WINE did not. But, no big loss. Nothing I really needed.
