wine and dga - screen goes blank

I've been trying to get steam running under WINE and I've gotten quite far. I can run steam but I can't play the games, most likely because they need DGA. When I try to load the game, WINE crashes out completely.

Anyhow, when I have dga enabled in wine config and also set in the Xconfig, upon running WINE, my screen goes black and I can't see a think. There is no input to my monitor at all (light goes orange). I have to switch to a VT and login as root then reboot the machine, all whilst the screen is still off. Because of this, there's no way of me finding out the exact cause, although I'm pretty certain it's caused by DGA.

Can someone help please?

I have an ATI Radeon, running the 3.7.0 drivers with WINE release 20031212.
This has also happened on older versions of WINE. Nobody else seems to have this problem, and it re-occurs, even after a full re-format.

Any help is appreciated.
