Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I installed wine and tried to run several win32 applications. All I saw were strange rectangles, instead of windows. with Buttons that did nothing.
Bash did a lot output with "not implemented" and "partly implemented".
Does it mean, that wine doesn't work with these applications, or can I do something?
Thanks a lot,
Clemens von Musil
P.S: I need to run at least one application (lexware financial office). I know wine, wine derivates and vmware. Is there - if wine can't do it - any other way to get lexware running?
Which version of wine did you install, and which Win32 applications did you try running? The most recent versions seem to implement most things pretty well. Perhaps you have an older version, or it's not configured properly. Post some of the errors you're getting and maybe we can help.
However, for office-type applications, VMWare seems to work best. As long as you don't need sound or fancy graphics, VMWare is more reliable (currently) than Wine is, in my experience.
; the TrueType font dirs you want to make accessible to wine
;"dir1" = "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"
;"dir2" = "/usr/share/fonts/truetype"
;"dir3" = "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TT"
;"dir4" = "/usr/share/fonts/TT"
