Wine...

Hi all,

I installed wine and tried to run several win32 applications. All I saw were strange rectangles, instead of windows. with Buttons that did nothing.
Bash did a lot output with "not implemented" and "partly implemented".
Does it mean, that wine doesn't work with these applications, or can I do something?

Thanks a lot,
Clemens von Musil

P.S: I need to run at least one application (lexware financial office). I know wine, wine derivates and vmware. Is there - if wine can't do it - any other way to get lexware running?

Which version of wine did you install, and which Win32 applications did you try running? The most recent versions seem to implement most things pretty well. Perhaps you have an older version, or it's not configured properly. Post some of the errors you're getting and maybe we can help.

However, for office-type applications, VMWare seems to work best. As long as you don't need sound or fancy graphics, VMWare is more reliable (currently) than Wine is, in my experience.

Hi!

Unfortunately, I can access the machine, on which I have installed wine, not until tuesday.

What I still know is, that I installed the 20030813 RH9 package first and compiled Wine-20030813.tar.gz after my first experiences.

I will post more detailed output on tuesday. Sorry!!
Clemens

I have most of Office97 running well enought to be useable in a production environment. I am running Wine 20030513.

IIRC, I had to change the fonts section of the .wine/config file to fix some things. Try this for the fonts:

[fonts]
;Read the Fonts topic in the Wine User Guide before adding aliases
;See a couple of examples for russian users below
"Alias0" = "Arial, -bitstream-charter-,1"
"Alias1" = "Tahoma, -adobe-helvetica-"
"Resolution" = "96"
"Default" = "-adobe-helvetica-"
"DefaultFixed" = "fixed"
"DefaultSerif" = "-adobe-times-"
"DefaultSansSerif" = "-adobe-helvetica-"

;; default TrueType fonts with russian koi8-r encoding
;"Default" = "-monotype-arial-*-*-*--*-*-*-*-*-*-koi8-r"
;"DefaultFixed" = "-monotype-courier new-*-*-*--*-*-*-*-*-*-koi8-r"
;"DefaultSerif" = "-monotype-times new roman-*-*-*--*-*-*-*-*-*-koi8-r"
;"DefaultSansSerif" = "-monotype-arial-*-*-*--*-*-*-*-*-*-koi8-r"
;; default cyrillic bitmap X fonts
;"Default" = "-cronyx-helvetica-"
;"DefaultFixed" = "fixed"
;"DefaultSerif" = "-cronyx-times-"
;"DefaultSansSerif" = "-cronyx-helvetica-"

; the TrueType font dirs you want to make accessible to wine
[FontDirs]
;"dir1" = "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"
;"dir2" = "/usr/share/fonts/truetype"
;"dir3" = "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TT"
;"dir4" = "/usr/share/fonts/TT"

The numbers on the packages are a date. Pick a most recent Red Hat *.rpm for your cpu's architecture and install it. Then make a config file for it.
