Wine

Is Wine any good? Are there other programs like Wine that are better? I heard of WineX, but you have to subscribe to that. I was reading the introduction on Wines website and this is a direct quote "Wine is still under development, and it is not yet suitable for general use." So why advertise it like it is then. I am currently downloading Wine 20031212 (to try my luck with it). Has anyone had any major problems with Wine? I would like to run programs like Kaza lite and Medal of Honor.

Yes, you have to read the instructions very carefully to make some programs work,
check Frank's Corner for lots of step-by-step instructions.

Sure, Wine (you know this) runs almost everything (some better than others), CrossOver Plugin runs QuickTime, Windows Media Player, and Shockwave. and finally WineX for the games.

You may want to try Win4Lin or VMware

Only if you want to play games that need Diretx, other wise you can get the CVS version.

A quote from the TransGaming website:
Quote:
Sign up for a TransGaming subscription at $5 per month, with a minimum three-month payment.
The price is not a bad deal to get games working.

YMMV check the Application Database for more info.

Yes, check the Application Database

Don't waste your time with Kazaa, get Mldonkey it connects to all P2P networks, and get the Platero or Sancho GUI for it. For Medal of Honor install info, check this page (I haven't tried it) for all other games check the Linux Gamer's FAQ

Hope that helps.

edit: fixed bad/broken urls

Ok, i figured i was going to run into problems, so here they are. When i cd /mnt/cdrom wine setup.exe the damn thing crashes on me. Fisrt it said i need DCOM95 in my Windows/Systems so i downloaded it into the Windows/System dir. Tried it again and it crashed again...go figure. It still says i need DCOM95? Well i cd into Windows/System ls and behold there it is DCOM95.exe. I have to laugh at this! When i do setup.exe the screen is all messed up, I can't read any of the errors without moving the screen around. Here are the errors...

Hello,

You have to "install" DCOM95 for it to do anything, not just have it in a directory. Try this:

Code:
wine DCOM95.exe
Also, You didn't mention what program you where trying to install, it's impossible to help you without this information, since all wine errors almost look the same.

Anyway, depending on what program you want to install see my previous post and go to Frank's Corner and to Wine's Application Database. All the help you need is in there, all you have to do is look for it.

Good Luck.

P.S. Check out linux-gamers.net for more info about installing games.
