well i got a friend from sichuan who has a very strong sichuan accent (apparently, i wouldn't know, but everyone says he does). but he says the language spoken there is VERY different from shanxi province.
and i agree with you that all the dialects are essentially chinese, but its like british english, canadian english, american english, and australian english.
