windows shares and smb

Hello!

I can see all my Windows shares using a windows computer, but using smbtree or smb:/ the server name comes up, but times out if I try to dig deeper.

Thanks for any help,
Murdock

I don't have a samba server...I am only using samba to connect to Windows shares. The logs only log nmbd and smbd.

Thanks,
Murdock

you will need smbfs and smbclient installed and running, then do the following:

The rest is only very basic information on HOWTO connect to a windows share from your linux box. I use this to connect to my winXP Pro system as that is were i store my data for NOW. That probably will change over time once i learn more about SAMBA and how to overcome the issues with the 2G limitation. I know there is a way around it, but i have not spent the time to understand it.

There are 3 basic steps to make a share mount from windows to linux.

1

open a konsole

2

mkdir (path to directory you want to share) example: /home/user/share

3

smbmount //IP/windows_share /home/user/share

password:

On the last step you will be prompted for a password of the user you are on your linux box. I use just 1 user name on all of my home systems so for me this is easy. If your linux user name is not the same as your windows user name, then you will have to read the 'man smbmount' for the proper arguments to add to the line in step #3.

good luck.

Thanks for all of the info.

However, I am not trying to mount the shares. I am trying to find them using smbtree. But I keep on getting a timeout connection error.

It even happens when no firewall is running.

Thanks,
Murdock
