hiiiii

i'm a newbie to linux...........and i have probs in installing
emulator for windows.............

i downloaded wine.......rpm package.....and installed
but it does not work......

can nyone tell me how to proceed with installation
or after installation.............

pls help me out

What error message do you see???

Have you written correctly your wine.conf file? you may find it in /etc/wine or ~/wine.
For more help on this file type "man wine.conf";

I am also a newbie. I recently downloaded Windoz Emulator but just don't know anything how to proceed... I have configured that .conf file, but simply don't know how to start. It's not weird as I have no Desktop icon to run it. ;>

Well, remember that the GUI is nothing more
then a graphical interface around the Linux Shell.
It is no Windows here, and it will not automaticly
add an desktop icon. You will have to do that
manually. The same goes for the menu. You need
to add menu-content by yourself.

If you wish to start wine go to the shell and type
wine and then the path to the program you wish
to start. Note that the shell is case sensitive.
Perhaps it varies from distributions, and perhaps
you first need to go to the path were your wine
executable is located, I don't know.

If shell scripts are not written for the GUI, like
wine, then nothing will happen when you start
them from the GUI. Other programs like
webbrowsers won't start when you try to start
them from the shell.

Generally thanks for help, but I need some more. My problem seems more complicated. I can't find an executable, though I've searched trough all the wine directories I have on my HD. And I tried to use find command in the console, but I don't know howTo. 'Find' + file name? Doesn't work.
Please give some instructions or/and links to websites involved.

you don't have to find a command...if you installed wine then all you do is type wine program.exe at the prompt...
wine IS is the command....

i have no libwine.so.1

Just to set the record straight, Wine is not an emulator.. so don't call it a Windows emulator.

"Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix."

When you talk of emulator, that's along the lines of VMWare and Lin4Win type applications and "emulators".

Have you installed the RPM properly? The RPM should install libwine.1.so. Try to uninstall wine and reinstall it again. If you have chosen to compile the source code then I am afraid I cannot help you further. I have no experience with compiling the source code of wine.

I run GaduGadu (a Polish IM) installer under Wine. I had configured Wine to have its virtual C drive on my C drive and D - on D. When I installed GaduGadu in Program Files on C, it automatically erased all the previously installed programs, including Internet Explorer. And so I had to reinstall Windows for I still can't work with good some programs in it.
So I'll stop thinking about Wine, get first some information about coexisting Windows XP and Linux, and then start to think about fixing bootloader for Linux. Until then, I fear working on Linux, cause I don't know if I can possibly damage my computer... And, you know, this is not the site where I am supposed to complain about OSes, but Windows is easy, and I temporarily have not much time to get information about effective running of, perhaps mor save, but harder to run, Linux. Maybe you can understand me. Thanx for Help is all I can give. I'll be back.
