Winamp/XMMS???

hey guys, not running linux on a dual boot yet (still vying for dad's permission.... he's worried about viruses and thinks i'll do something "evil" with it)
But through my experiences with Knoppix and Damn Small Linux, etc.. I've noticed that XMMS is almost identical to Winamp.. is there any official agreement between Nullsoft and the programmers or are they just squeaking by through not using any Winamp code? Regardless, both are very cool music players

hmm... that's a good question. i've never heard of an agreement with nullsoft of any sort, but then again that's me

xmms is really cool

which distro were you thinking of setting up? i couldn't get xmms to work properly in Red Hat 9.0. it comes without mp3 support. there are patches you can download to fix it but all the patch did for me was wreck the sound on the entire install. after three tries, i switched to mandrake 9.1, and it's going just great.

i feel like such a glorious linux noob, 2 weeks and i already have a distro preference!!!

although it's only between 2... the rest will come...

it's working for me as a linux newbie.

red hat was good too, it was just the sound problems that got me to switch.

at school starting september we are going to be doing linux programming in Red Hat 9.0, so i figured i would use that. but come to think of it maybe it's good to learn more than one distro!

i'm not quite hardcore enough to be into the whole culture of "windows sucks" yet, but it may be coming.

as far as going "windows free", looks like it won't be for a long time, since i'll need it to do windows programming at school.

well, i like windows XP, but i'm starting to use linux more regularly.

you could try telling them:

linux is pretty much virus free. no worries about viruses here.

linux is free! parents like that.

linux will keep you occupied and away from bad things like drugs.

you will back up everything on the hard drive before you do the install (which you should anyways)

or if possible you could buy your own computer! that seems to be the only answer these days. i know some linux distros can run on relativly old computers.

heheheh.

mine too, that's why i moved out

my dad always used to panic whenever i did anything to our computer. even "good" things, like installing a firewall.

"what is a firewall? i don't like the sound of that"

Wow, I guess it is good that I didn't get into computers until I moved out of the house. After reading your plight I could just see my mom freaking out about me putting Linux on the computer. I remember her freaking out when my Dad upgraded from Win 3.11 to Windows 95 (this was in 2000!!!) She said it was to complicated for her....and by complicated I think she meant different.

If your Dad is worried about viruses then he is way off, 99% of viruses are windows based.

Good luck.....hope you get Linux put on soon. I find it is by far the best system for programming, database stuff and web development.
