Winamp (wine) unable to play mp3's

I was playing mp3's fine in winamp last night. Although buggy (as in sometimes I would randomly get kicked to the fedora login screen) it still would play the files. Now I am getting this error message when trying to play mp3's in winamp.

Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

I would love to use XMMS, but when I play files in XMMS the tempo of the song is increased, and the sound is "skippy". It's like someone is pushing the mute button on and off at 120 times a second. If I could get this problem solved I wouldn't have to worry about using winamp through wine.

Have you tried changing which sound out it's using?

Try switching from OSS (default) to ALSA or esound.

I'm using ALSA now, I'll try esound, and OSS.

THANK you!

Such a simple suggestion ... it's a shame I hadn't tried it before. OSS works fine

For some reason, now when I try to play audio files I get the "could not open audio" message on every output plugin.

I got this last night a few times (When I first got the music working) but I would simply switch to and from the plugins randomly and at some point i would randomly get sound again upon returning to OSS. Now I am getting nothing at all. What could be causing this?

I used to have a problem with the 2.4 kernel where xmms wouldnt close out properly. It might be worth bringing up a task manager (ctrl-esc) and looking for multiple instances of xmms.
