Why wont my PS/2 Intellimouse work?

I recycled a buddies old computer, which used to run Windoze 98, and installed Slackware on it. I recently reinstalled Slackware, to get the latest kernel and software (this computer is not connected to the web, so I just reinstall every once in a while). I didn't plug the mouse in during installation and everything went fine. Now I can run all of my CLI and TUI apps, but KDE is defunct. The mouse doesn't work. I'm not sure if this is because it wasn't plugged in during installation. I tryed tweaking the xorg.conf, and changed the protocol to intellimouse, which didn't work, and enabled every /dev/mouse etc. option. I can't figure out why it wont work? Is it a problem w/ X or is it deeper? Any help is greatly appreciated. NOTE: This does not just mean scroll button, or buttons in general, I cannot move the mouse, scroll, click or anything.

I suggest you run "xorgconfig" as root. When you get to the mouse section, you need to make sure you select the intellimouse protocol (imps/2).

Didn't work

I've tryed the xorgconfig, It didn't work. I also edited the xorg.conf file and changed the protocol to IMPS/2. The mouse says PS/2 compatible on it, so PS/2 should work. Any suggestions? Could it be a problem outside of X (I doubt it, but its worth a quick thought). Where else could my mouse be other than the symbolic link /dev/mouse? /dev/input/??? I don't know how I'd find out. I also tried PnP protocol auto detection (or something like that), It didn't work. This is a very old intellimouse (I think its 1.1).

If using a 2.4 kernel, the mouse is usually /dev/mouse and on 2.6 kernels its usually /dev/input/mice. Can you post any error messages you get when you try to start X after running xorgconfig.
