Why Mozilla 1.4 and Firebird use ugly fonts?

Why does Mozilla 1.4 use some kind of ugly fonts when I first install it in additional to the original Mozilla in Red Hat 9?

Perhaps you haven't got any TrueType fonts installed. After my system-wide upgrade (slackware 9.1) I seam to have AntiAlias fonts. They are really cool... definitely worth looking for.

I think you can find something at google for this.

Even if you have truetype fonts installed in X, Mozilla won't use them by default.
Go to:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/FDU/
And it should tell you everything you need to know. X and Mozilla look lovely thanks to this site.

I've often wondered how to do this. I'm going to try it this weekend. I've used Linux for quite awhile and always I hated the fonts that come with X.

Do you already have true-type fonts installed? Like Arial, verdana and such? since they are commercial, you might want to copy them from your windows fonts directory. (or find an slackware tgz at the web, I know these exist too)

My /etc/X11/XF86Config contains these font paths:

FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/"

I've installed additional true-type fonts in the some folder called true-type, and sym-linked the other true-type folders to that same location.

That's all, hope this helps

Presumably you've done the specific Mozilla bit at the bottom of that page? If so, start Mozilla from a console, and see what it says about fonts. Post the output, and I'll have a look.

I went through exactly the same thing you're going through. I finally resolved the problem by downloading an XFT-enabled version of Mozilla V1.4 and then doing a little customizing, it's all explained in the thread:
