Why is it so diffcult to play videos in Linux

Hi

I have been using Linux since June04 , the following distro's : FC1, FC2, FC3, Suse 9.1 , and now Mandrake 10.1 CE

On none of these is it possible to play VCD's or DVD's bought off the shelf, be it Kaffiene, mplayer, Xine whatever they just don't play it.
Why ?
And what do I do now - what do I Install and from where ?

let me guess, the picture is full of garbage, even if you get a picture?

The main problem with stock dvd:s is that they are encrypted. And yeah, the decrypting isnt a cheap license of something like that, so there isnt one included in any of the aps. There is a lib that has been made to get around this, and it works great. The one thing is, that in most countries it is illegal.

I dont know hwre you live, so I wont lecture you anymore on that matter, check it out if you want and are alowed to. Heres a grab from its slackware package description:
Code:

PACKAGE DESCRIPTION:
libdvdcss: libdvdcss (dvd viewing library)
libdvdcss:
libdvdcss: libdvdcss allows you to view DVDs you have legally
libdvdcss: purchased on your computer.  It's purpose is to
libdvdcss: decrypt the scrambled signal Hollywood requires
libdvdcss: DVDs be shipped with, and allows that stream to
libdvdcss: play back on your computer.

You have to be more specific about your question. What errors are you getting when you try to play your DVDs? With mplayer, I think you have to compile it to support large files if you want to play a long DVD, but don't quote me on that. I haven't compiled mplayer in quite some time. I play all of my videos with mplayer and haven't had any problems with it (knock on wood).

thanks folks

I think the missing files are what I have to add and will do so and let you know the results

my only now contraint is that I hav a limit to how much I can down load in a day around 10 mb max per 24 hours
