why is GVIM slow across a network connection?

Greetings all,

I run an exceed xhost under windows XP and I run X apps on a virtual machine running on the same host. For the last few years (10) I noticed that GVIM is really slow updating. If I open the window up very large it can take almost a second to scroll the whole window up.

I remember that older versions of gvim ran pretty fast using the same setup.

Since the display work is being done in the windows environment and the network connection is ideally fast, where could things be slowing down?

Has anyone else noticed this problem?

thanks.
