I'm using Debian Sid and Xfree86 4.x the window-manager is AfterStep. I made some changes in my system: I got rid of Gnome and I installed purely AfterStep and also installed KDE. Everything is fine I can run my X server in AfterStep or in KDE both are working just fine. BUT the xmms quits playing the playlist usually after couple of songs.
It used to do it before under Gnome but only when I started the wmXMMS panel.
I find that if you delete the ~/.xmms folder that usually fixes the problem. I had that problem when I made some settings changes ( a la sound options). Beware though if you delete that folder you will lose your settings, equalizer presets and the skin you had used. Hope this helps
I would say maybe a currupt playlist or song. Try resorting the list first and see if it's a particular song that is halting Xmms. Also try to recreate the playlist.
