Why does automount show mounted partitions?

I am using direct mounts because I like being able to cd to the directory and use tab completion..versus indirect mounts where you can not do that since the directories are virtual.

But, why does the /proc/mounts show these directories mounted(I have not cd to them)? Are they technically mounted? The reason why I use automount is because if I ever have power failures at least not all filesystems that are not being used will be unmounted and not corrupted.

Code:
localhost init.d # cat /proc/mounts
rootfs / rootfs rw 0 0
/dev/root / ext4 rw,noatime,barrier=1,data=ordered,discard 0 0
proc /proc proc rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime 0 0
rc-svcdir /lib64/rc/init.d tmpfs rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,size=1024k,mode=755 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime 0 0
debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime 0 0
udev /dev tmpfs rw,nosuid,relatime,size=10240k,mode=755 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,gid=5,mode=620 0 0

Greetingz!

Things such as autofs/automount keep the mount's "hot" (ready-to-use). They unmount the filesystem, but in order to mount it up real fast, they sort-of-unmount it.
One of the side effects of this would be leaving the autofs entries in /etc/mnttab in the output for mount. Basically, automount doesn't really leave mounting up to the traditional methods of mounting filesystems.
