Why do KDE/Gnome seem so slow?

Hi,

Ive been using linux for a few months now with slack 9.1 and kernel 2.6. I'm really starting to get annoyed by how slow it is in general. KDE and Gnome are both just really slow compared to windows in terms of 2d effects. When I drag winows around or resize or open menus KDE and Gnome just lag, but in windows it's instant. Im running the latest nvidia driver, 3d works fine so I know it's installed correctly. The speed improved alot with the nvidia driver, but still is too slow for me. I'm wondering what, if there is anything, I'm missing to get better 2D acceleration. I really like KDE and Gnome becuase they're fully featured and I'm running a p4 2.6/GF3 so I don't think I should have to use a lighter weight DE. Please give me some ideas, I want to claim KDE or Gnome are better than windows but this is really holding me back. Thanks.

Lightbulb gogogo - speed up gnome

Hi there!
Perhaps you should have a glance at this
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome.../msg00249.html
and at that
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome.../msg00318.html
You sould just search through some kde and gnome mailing list archives and i'm sure you'll find more like these two threads above.

Best regards,
