Why cant I get make to work

Hiya

So over the years I have tried a number of different linuxes, and I am always trying to install some software not available through the systems package manager. However after typing

./compile

I try to type

make

and it never works on any system ever. I am confused as it is never mentioned as an issue, and I figure with a simple install of (at least one of the many) linux systems I have tried, one would be able to compile these programs.

currently I am using mint, this is the error I get when trying to install fox-toolkit

First of all linux is ONE and comes in a lot of distribution. Linux is based in ONE kernel and every distro adds some apps and a desktop (if wants).
Now as i see in the first message after make i can see that the compilation (./configure) hasn't finished successfully please give the answer of the complile to help you!!!

you need to install certainl header packages in order to compile code against software installed form packages. Here you need the xorg devel package

It compiled nicely on my system (Slackware64 13.1).
If you do have xorg devel packages and it still can't find them you might need to specify the location:

Quote:
X features:
--x-includes=DIR X include files are in DIR
--x-libraries=DIR X library files are in DIR

Why are you using ./compile? Normally one would use ./configure before using make/make install.

OK, well that completed. Clearly there are libraries it is not finding, but is ok with that. You might not be though, as functionality may be automatically tuned to not use the libraries when you want those pieces built it. But agian it created a make file, so make should give you something.

I have tried, but

Quote:
sudo apt-get install xorg-devel
doesn't find the package.

I'm not using Mint and don't know how exactly -devel packages are named. Could you try to find all the packages starting with xorg (xorg*) and see if anyone of them mentions -devel or -headers or -source?

nothing for xorg, except a suggestion for forg

I dont know what forg is.

aside, I googled xorg, and it came up with something that looked like another forum. just less pretty than this one.

http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2htm...xorg-x11-devel

I found this which may be useful, but wanted to check. Especially since I have never got make to work, and if it requires to be made them I am a bit stuffed.
