Why can't I see the files in the directories on my Samba-Shares?
I see that I stumped whoever cared to ignore my last question posted in the forum, but I'm back with another that is a little less obscure.
I'm trying to manage my Linux Router...
Pentium II 350
320 MB RAM
- DEC Tulip 10 Mbps Combo (192.168.1.1)
- Realtek 8139 10/100 Mbps (192.168.0.1)
3 Hard-Drives
- HDA Seagate 10.4 GB "Linux Mandrake 7.1"
- HDB Seagate 10.4 GB "Windows 2000 Server Pro"
- HDC Maxtor 20 GB (File Archive)
Here's the problem. I have a 10 Mbit hub attatched to the Tulip card of the router and 2 other systems attatched to that.
- (System A) 192.168.1.3/24 Windows 2000 Server Pro
- (System B) 192.168.1.10/24 Windows 98 SE
I have been trying to configure Samba via "SWAT" and other times I have had no problems at all (i.e. with Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95 OSR2B) but after setting up shares and rights etc, on the Win2000 system, I can see all of the directories on the share but none of the actual files in them. But on the Win98 system I can see all of the files and I can download and upload files, but I can delete any of them. Even if it's a file I just added. My friend and I both have been having the same problem with out respective networks.
Just to complicate matters... When I set up the first share which was to be visible and accessable only to the Win2000 system, everything worked fine. I then set up another share that could be seen and accessed by the Win98 system as well as the Win2000 system. Again Win2000 behaved properly, but Win98 could not delete any of the files on it's share. (Even though I gave it explicit writes to do so.)
So then I tried relaxing the access rights for the Win98 share to the level of the Win2000 share, which could is allowed to do everything but write a knitted-sweater to the hard-drive, but after effecting that change, I was unable to see the files in the directories of either share on the Win2000 system and the situation had not change in Win98.
What the hell's going on here???!!! I know this stuff works, because I've done it before, albeit without SWAT, but what difference should that make. Why would changing the permissions on one share effect the permissions and attributes of another share completely un-related to it? I even tried using "chmod" on the Linux-end of the ishares and giving the whole damned world rights to do whatever they please to the drive, and still no change.
Help.
