which proxy server is better under linux

every One

I want to install any proxy server under redhat 9 or mandrake 9.1.
My requierments.

1- Internet sharing
2- Browsing, msn , icq,
3- Email have pop3 mail account at our on domain

above are my basic requiermnet

Optional Requiement (will be requier later)
1- Should be able to work as cascading proxy (actualy i am using Internet via sattilte)
2- bandwith control
3- IP , mac Address , user and password setting for security
4- can be control , internet sharing , downloading, for specific user or group


please guied me which proxy server is better for above requiermnets and easy to configure and manage , already i am woking in MS envoiermnet and now ant to switch Linux proxy

squid is a good proxy ; i havent used any other so i dont know which is best ;

now i want to configure it, is there any one who can help me step by step for basic internet sharing for 4 clients.
i have downloaded some squid version - 2.4 , 2.5 (steble 1 to steble 4) and squid 3 . which is better and bug free

Well u have to start with squid.conf file...
And there are lots of configuration for squid..

I am using squid. .and it is the one of the best proxy server i had encountered...
Best control , best management, and very easy if understand its basic funtions...

And I am using squid with maximum optimization...

for start you can do this:

start squid : /etc/init.d/./squid start
allow http: edit the line "http_access deny_all" TO "http_access allow_all" OF /etc/squid.conf file to start browsing from any machine.
proxy in other pc: browsers in other pc's will configure the proxy like " IP address of your network card" port "3125" ---this is squid's default port. you can change it to legacy "8080"

first i want to install squid server, actualy i installed linux as destop envoierment, and when i search squid with whereis squid its find nothin, so first i will have install squid i have 3 version which i point my last post in tar.gz format
in my view first i will have to untar with
1- tar xvzf serquid. server. file.name.tar.gz
2- ./configure
3- make
4- make install

is this ok or nay thing else for proper squid installation

If you have installed squid but u didn't find anything then look
/usr/local/squid/

If it is installed then u must find all files related to squid in this directory.

And if u installed from rpm then they reside in different directory..
I don't remember but the squid.conf is found /etc/squid/

First check for above files..

Your steps for installation are correct... just check ur first line..

Once you get it installed the squid.conf file is not too hard to set up. Set your network parameters and basic settings and you're off. One thing though, Squid alone will not proxy pop3 or any messenger client that uses something other than the standard http communication method (MSN and GAIM work through squid). For Pop3 access you will have to set up a separate proxy for pop3 or set up a port forward in your routing tables (iptables).

i ahve install Squid 2.5 stable 4.
i used these command for install it

gzip squid.version.tar.tz
tar zvf squid.version.tar
cd squid.fullname
./configyre --prefix=/usr/local/squid
make all
make install

its complete every thing without any error
i also install latest webmin , but aftre setting path its giving this error
"your version of squid is not supported by webmin only version 1.1 to 2.5 are supported by this module. the command /usr/local/squid -v returned:"

my squid version is 2.5 stable 4. whta can do for it is it webwine bug and support prblem, guied me if webmine easy to good for configure squid otherwise guied me for basic configuration that internet sharing start aftre that help mr for fine tuning.

its also requir DNS , should i also install and configure DNS first.

start squid command does not work

error: bash: start: command not found

is it mean any linux pakage i will have to install for start command and any thing else

No it just means , you didnt read the earlier posts....

which says how to start squid....

there is some error, soeme tilme squid start but some time give this following error

FATAL: Could not deternime fully qulified hostname. please set 'visible-hostname'

CPU usege:0.020 seconds = 0.010 user + 0.010 sys

/etc/init.d/squid: line 162: 2366 Aborted $SQUID -k check

the above error comes with all these command:
squid -z
squid start
squid stop
service squid status
service squid start
service squid stop


one thing more actualy i install squied stable4 but it shows stable1

if this version is not good then tell me how to remove this so i will install
squid 2.4

i have resolve problem of last post post # 13 by adding some entries in DNS tab under network confoguration tool.
now i configure squid.conf as by krussell in post 6.
my squid serip is 192.168.0.50
squid port is 3128

and these entries i have set in client browser
when i try to brows internet from client computer, fail and give following error

"ERROR
The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: <http://wwww.yahoo.com/>
The following error was encountered:
Access Denied.
Access control configuration prevents your request from being allowed at this time. Please contact your service provider if you feel this is incorrect.
Your cache administrator is root <mailto:root>.

1- is there any thing else to configure in squid .
2- one thing more when i dial internet on squid server from kppp or wvdial the the server it self does not browse, but when i dial internet from network configuration its start dial, in both condition client does not browse.

3-and is there any option so i can upgrade squied stable1 to stable4
4-aftre that i will ahve to configure this server an other proxy server so is there any option that it should work for cascading proxy
