which linux can be installed on virtualbox

Hi m using virtal box as my vm. I tried to install linux but this does not install my live cd. Instead it directly runs. So my created programs get wiped out if i remove live cd from the iso source.

Please tell me which linux can be installed installed on virtual box.

My intention to have a linux installed in a vm in parallel to host windows.

I have Ubuntu 12.04 running in virtualbox inside Ubuntu 12.04.

But it should not matter. Which distro did you try? There is at least one (possibly a few) where a liveCD is exactly that and you need another version for installation.

The only restriction is that you can't install a 64bit distribution in a 32bit vbox-installation (the same as with installation on real hardware). And of course the host must have enough RAM to get both, host and guest running.

BTW: you don't need a LiveCD, you can mount the image in vbox and install from there.

This is only true as long as your CPU does not support hardware virtualization.

Not all LIVE CD's have a way to install to a vm's virtual hard drive (or in the case of real computer, real hard drive.) On the majority of live cd's there is a way to run an installer to install the iso to a virtual hard drive.

If we knew what live cd you are trying we might make a better guess.

thanks all,

I tried to install backtrack 5 (BT5R2-GNOME-32.iso) on my virtual box 4.2.4.

let me know if this BT is compatible to install.

as every time i mark the path of iso. the bt5 runs directly.

I'm not sure that I am understanding but, if you mean it boots the way a Live CD would that is expected behavior. You boot it then you click on the install icon when you get to the Desktop. You could take a look at the youtube video below which goes through the whole process:

If that's not it, you need to be more specific about what is happening.

Any OS that can be installed to a hard drive can be installed to VirtualBox.

Once you install the distro from an *.iso, you have to shutdown the VM and disassociate the *.iso from the virtual CD drive, or you will continue to boot the CD *.iso.

In the settings for that VM, go to "Storage" and reset the CD Drive to empty.

thank you yancek and everybody

the video was helpful.

the important point that i observed is the command startx command which i need to enter once live cd boots.so that it gives me normal windows interface and an option to install as an icon.
