which libpcap do I have?

When I use dpkg to find out which version of libpcap I have installed, I see the following:

dave@comitan:/home/dave/repos/gitnc/libpcap$ !614
dpkg -l |grep pcap
ii libpcap-dev 1.5.3-2 all development library for libpcap (
ii libpcap0.8:amd 1.5.3-2 amd64 system interface for user-level p
ii libpcap0.8-dev 1.5.3-2 amd64 development library and header fi

Note that the version says 1.5.3-2 but the filename contains a 0.8 . Which one indicates the pcap version that I have and what does the other one mean and why are they different?

I'm running ubuntu 14.04 on a 64 bit intel machine (pentium 5 I think - but not sure about that ).

List package contents or check the .dsc file in the repo nfo page and you'll find on 14.04 the libpcap version is 1.5.3-2.

The nickname "libpcap0.8" appeared first time in Debian 4 Etch.
Reason ? May be some considerations about having two versions.

And there would also in those years be a libpcap0.8 in the Debian Sid, that Ubuntu 7* etc. was based on.
