Which distro for Raspberry Pi


Christmas is coming young family member is writing her list.
Raspberry Pie is at the top,(Barbie is pants now)

So which Distro is Raspberry friendly?

Unless you've a compelling reason I'd strongly recommend she sticks with the standard Raspbian distro from http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

The vast majority of the Pi websites / tutorials etc. assume it's the standard distro that's running.

Of course could always go with NOOBS (same link) which is recommended for first timers.

Depending on the age of the person the gift is for, you might want to consider the kit referenced in this thread.

For some more sophisticated solutions, be aware that the SD cards when they get a lot of use, end up not working for various reasons. The cards get misaligned due to warping sometimes, or the cards themselves get old and don't accept writes after a while. Some solutions would be to boot off the SD card, because you have too I believe, and then run all data primarily off of an attached HDD via the SATA interface. If the SD card needs to be swapped out, it will be a nuisance, but not always a loss of data.

With the new B+ using push-click microSD cards warping should be less of an issue. Regarding too many writes, all depends on the quality of the card that's used.
