After running Pine remotely to view some mail on the server, I can no longer access those emails remotely with Evolution or Outlook Express. I know the mail is still there on the server someplace, because it still appears in Pine's "INBOX" folder. But that is clearly not the same as the "Inbox" folder for that account which appears in Evolution and Outlook Express, which is now empty.
How can I configure Evolution to re-access those emails?
I know the mail is still there on the server someplace, because it still appears in Pine's "INBOX" folder.
That is not necessarily true; the emails could have been removed from the server. Tell us more about your configuration - type of mail account (POP/IMAP), whether you're using, e.g. fetchmail to receive the mail and anything else you think is relevant.
I have no control over the server -- I only have an account on it.
I have been using Evolution at home and on my laptop to access the email received in my school account; in Evolution under "Receiving Email" I specified IMAP and it was working fine. Until today, when I wanted to check my email from another computer so I ssh'd into my school account and ran Pine. Now, running Evolution from home again, the Inbox for that account is empty. But still, if I ssh into the server and run Pine, its folder list includes an INBOX (note all uppercase), and that INBOX still contains all the emails.
I now see that my home directory (at school) contains an mbox file which apparently contains the emails.
So yes, point 11.9 in the pine FAQ is relevant, but I don't really understand what it means. Can I configure other clients (e.g. Evolution, Outlook Express) to read that file? Or can I transfer it to some other file that other clients can access? Or is the mail in mbox forever lost to every client other than Pine?
I see that if I delete (rename) the mbox file, this will not happen again -- I will be able to read future emails in Pine and I will still be able to see those emails remotely in Evolution ,etc.
The remaining question is, what's the best/easiest way to export the contents of the mbox file into a format that will be accessible by Evolution?
Thanks, that works, but it entails copying the mbox file to every other machine on which I want to see those mails. Is there any way to get Evolution to include a REMOTE mbox file in its list of remote account folders (i.e. the mbox file in my home directory at school)?
I find the concept of "folders" in mail clients confusing. I'm used to the idea of folder=directory in a file structure, but all of these mail clients seem to look at an individual FILE and see it as containing multiple folders.
Is there any way to get Evolution to include a REMOTE mbox file in its list of remote account folders (i.e. the mbox file in my home directory at school)?
I am not able to understand your question clearly, but you can try posting this question to :
Evolution's mailing list.
Kindly explain the relevant problem in a detailed way there.
One question per mail.
