To install from source as a user, I think that all you have to do is create a programs directory in your home directory and install it to there.
So what I would do is this:
cd
mkdir usr
mkdir usr/src
[Download gaim to the /home/username/usr/src directory]
cd usr/src
tar xvzf gaim-blahblahblah.tar.gz
cd gaim-blahblahblah
*****[This is the important bit]******
./configure --prefix=~/usr [+any other options you want]
*******************************
make
make install
That should install it to /home/username/usr as if it were /usr. You would then need to add the directory to your path and possibly set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include /home/username/usr/lib in your profile (probably ~/.bash_profile). It's possible you'll get errors about particular directories not existing (eg ~/usr/lib, ~/usr/bin) , but you can just create them yourself.
