Basically YOUR DISTRO is the best source of software. Your distro most certainly comes with repositories and a package manager that can automatically install and update packages for common software easily. The packages in the repositories are specifically compiled, configured, and tested for your distro, so you don't have to worry about compatibility problems, etc.
