where are they installed?

Goodmorning guys...... I have been using the Linux for 2 years and still i am not so familiar with its directory structure......
Yesterday my brother asked me where the squirrelmail was installed..... I didn't what to tell him...... In windows everything are under Program Files directories
....
But in Linux where i can find my programs?
I had started looking under /bin
/sbin
/usr/local/
/usr
but i didn't find it...
What i must to do for quickly finding the installation directory of each program?

You can do a "which <command>" to see where a particular program resides.

If you use an rpm-based distro, you can do a 'rpm -ql <package-name>' to display all installed files, along with there path.

Usually, user programs are in /usr/bin, admin programs are in /usr/sbin.

If all fails, you can search the whole file system for the particular program/file by typing "find / -name <file name>"

If you want to search the filesystem for files, it is usually better to use locate. I think almost all Linux systems include this now. It works by having a cron job index all the filenames and then locate just searches through the index. Very fast.
