If I'm reading the OP's post correctly, he currently doesn't have an OS installed, and so can't run commands as requested.
Richard, you want to make sure your Fedora disks are correct. sha1sum them to check that they're all good. I wouldn't rely soley on the built in "check this disk" tool.
There should be a way to boot from that first Fedora disk and run the commands suggested here. You may have to Ctrl-Alt-Fkey to get to another virtual terminal to run them. Fedora may come with a "rescue" CD, but I have no idea what it does or how to use it.
The folks at fedoraforums might be of some help in using the Fedora install/rescue CD's to check your partition map and hard drive.
