what to install next...


I had some parts lying around the other night, and thought i would put a computer together and have a go at linux. Im just gona use it as a web dev server.ive just installed Fedora. Then Apache, with Php and MySQL. What other programs do you recommend i install? ProFTPd? or anything else?

Alrighty.

If it's a server you have there it should be secure. Download nmap and/or nessus which are both great security tools.
You may want to firewall it up. Try firestarter.

And if you just get bored crack-attack can be lots of fun!

wel ive been told i dont really need a firewall because my network has a Hardware Firewall.

You think i should install OpenSSH and ProFTPd?

install a firewall anyway.
Iptables will be on there by default - config it just to let your port 80 thru for webserver and port 22 for ssh to admin the box from remote.
make sure the services are started on bootup.

ok, well all my machines on the network are running xp, is it possible for the linux box to show up in the network workgroup?

yeah there may be a linneighbourhood in Fedora. I know RH9 did not have it and MDK 9.2 did. That way you could set it up by gui. Other wise you can just run the smbmount to a remote share...when you get it right add it to your startup...there are plenty of posts in here on this topic~ run a search.
