What terminal emulator will run from....

the root prompt?

I need to set up a box so that it will boot straight into a terminal emulator, it will be used to display data from a 232 interface to serial 1, and I want it to come up in the TE.

Being a noob I am kind of lost on how to set this up, I set my machine up so the defualt run level is 3....

now I need to get a TE running and have so far just made myself more confused with searching forums...ugh

please help, and thank you much!

I'm not sure if it will help...but I've had a lot of luck with x3270 to interface with our Mainframe...but I don't know a lot about emulators...doesn't hurt to try.

How do I start that from user prompt?

I am running mandrake 9.1 run level 3, logged in as user...NOT root...I wasn't thinking clearly as i was typing getting the clueless fog going on.

Hmmmm well, first off, it needs to be installed, since I don't think it comes standard (it didn't with me and my Mandrake 9.1 install) but there is an rpm around somewhere.

If you're in run level 3...mmm you need to be in X, since x3270 is a terminal emulator made to run in Xwindows. Is that a problem or are you looking for something strictly command line?

I guess I can run in X,

what I need is something to display data from a 232 port on another device VT100, and the users only need the data display, not to change or enter data, so I want to remove the keyboard/mouse once configured and have the box come up and relog into the terminal mode.

In X itself I have gnome which seems pretty good, but I am back at the "how do I automate the entire process" question regardless.

Thanks agian. :D

Yikes! Well, I suppose its doable...but will require a little more expertise than I can give just off the cuff like this...but I can give you an overview maybe...

You have Mandrake 9.1 so once everything you need (ie: TE) is installed, you can first set it up to boot in run level 5 (this will start X automatically on boot) and then you can set up mdkkdm or gdm or whichever display manager you choose (I'd recommend KDM myself...all of which are in Mandrake 9.1) you can set it up to autologin a specific user...then in THAT user you can have it set to start up your TE automatically.

That should do it! :D

Hey that sounds good, lemme give it a try!

Will keep you posted.

this would be alot easier if the users where this will be didn't have to try and sticka game, or surf on any terminal they touch. :D

Here's what I ended up doing to make this bad boy work.

Installed a link to konsole in the autostart file for the logged in user, enabled auto login for said user. (gotta love KDE that comes with Mandrake)

Poof does what I need I think, hopefully with the keyboard removed nobody will get inventive and mess around.

Thanks for help!

:D :D :D
