Easy Peasy. It also has a function under the edit that you can have it automatically put a 16:9 crop box, hit ctrl-t ctrl-s and it's done.

Ham Radio Deluxe would be nice too.

you should tell us which opersting system & desktop environment to get the best advice
Sigil for linux is on github
https://github.com/Sigil-Ebook/Sigil/tree/master/docs

Digikam is quite a bit more user friendly than Gimp, set up the toolbars for whatever short cuts you require

For Irfanview, have you tried this?:

http://www.boekhoff.info/?pid=linux&...-view-on-linux

I use XnView MP for basic image manipulation. It doesn't do the text/shape editing that you mention, but it does do the 16:9 cropping. However, I think that the original XnView did allow adding text etc.

I suggest that you contact XnView (see the Contact section on their website), tell them precisely what you're looking for in your application and ask them if either XnView or XnView MP can achieve that. I found the developer very approachable when I asked him a question about batch editing.

You are quite correct. Guess I "assumed" that y'all would figure I was running some version of Linux.
Linux Mint 17.? KDE
Did get Sigil for Linux. Works great!
Tried Digikam (once or twice) but will take a closer look at it.
Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. Just downloaded it and will give it a try. And contact the developer if needed.
Have a great day!

I can definitely concur on XNView ... for the text thingy it just works the other way round from Irfan View: First press Ctrl+T, enter the text into a dialog, click OK and place it (shows the text as you move the cursor so quite easy to place). If you didn't like the text size, no prob, hit Esc, and try again - it remembers what you typed last so you don't need to retype - just click the font button and change. You can even add such text in batch mode onto many 100s or more files.

This is probably XNView's most awesome feature: Any edit you can do in the editor you can do in batch mode to multiple selected files all at once. Makes adding stuff like watermarks, resizing to maximum height/widths, changing colours, setting rotations, etc. a breeze (a few seconds worth of work to fix 100s of photos)!

How about the program by Nuance - Dragon Naturally Speaking. I would even pay real money for this one.

Smile Picasa, used to be Google's photo programme, 2nd Skype

Picasa first and foremost - I know it's in Linux Mint 17.2, but I'd like it more widely available. It was great for printing 4 different photos on one A4 sheet. If not Picasa, how about getting Shotwell or other photo programme to do multiple prints on one A4? I mostly used either two or four photos, with full A4 size for the best shots. That way it saved printer ink but let me see more of my photos on paper.

Second Skype. More to keep in touch with my friends - I know I'm supposed to be able to get it in Wine, but I've never managed to get it to work. But that's a far lower priority for me. There's always Google hangouts to try.

For Picasa I'd pay £10, maybe up to £20-25. As it is, I keep Linux Mint on an old computer, and dual boot another with Ubuntu. I mainly use Ubuntu 14.04, as I only changed over (for good) to Linux recently. Skype, maybe £5-10.

Thanks for all the developers who make Linux so much easier to use (for an ex-Windows user) than it used to be ten years or so ago. I for one greatly appreciate your efforts.

I've been using the Linux 17.3 repository version of Skype (sudo apt-get install skype) for a while. Works a treat.

I'll expect your cheque in the post.

Thanks

I didn't know about Skype being available with Linux Mint, thanks. Being still wet behind the ears in Linux matters, I stick to the well-tried versions and the official repositories - but I never found Skype! As to payment, well.... if you could get me Picasa on Ubuntu, (or printing 2 to 4 photos on one A4 sheet) now, well .......... Anyway, thanks.

Were you aware that Picasa is no longer as of earlier this year?

Google support for Picasa on Linux ended in 2012, but there are some debs previous to that floating around if you search for them (which essentially install Picasa and a specific version of Wine).

I've never tried it but Play on Linux also do a version of Picasa:

https://www.playonlinux.com/en/app-1...Picasa_39.html (ignore the initial thumbs down, some people have reported success).

Best to experiment in a VM.

Voice-to-text in Linux.
How about the program by Nuance - Dragon Naturally Speaking. I would even pay real money for this one.
Me too. I have tried to get legitimately purchased late and earlier versions of DNS working with Wine in Linux Mint 17.3 and earlier versions, as well as in other distros, without success.
The lack of voice–to-text (V2T) ties our household to dual booting Windows 10 and Linux Mint on our PCs and laptops.
I may be wrong, but understand that Google worked with Nuance to port DNS to Android, so I guess that it should be possible to do the same for Linux.
As control by voice and V2T are being vigorously developed/promoted by Microsoft and Apple et al, I suspect that the lack of such facilities in the Linux space will be an increasing deterrent to many prospective users; especially sight impaired or physically disabled folk.

Final Draft Alternative - Fade In Professional

I saw some old posts of people wanting Final Draft ported to Linux. Fade In Professional is supported on Linux, OSX, Windows, Android, & iPhone/iPad. I have tried their demo version. It appears to be a great contender to Final Draft. I'm a screenwriter and have no affiliation to any of the companies that make this software. Here's a link to download the Fade In Pro demo...

There are millions of us that need Dragon Naturally Speaking and since I have yet to get a single developing speech to text program to run in Ubuntu it would be next to a God send if It would run on my Linux systems.

The last version of Skype that I had on Linux appeared to be running in Wine. I got an email yesterday though, informing me that an alpha version is available for Native Linux.
