I would like to see a good download manager.
Dialup friendly -ie
supports resume
supports rollback
supports queue's
schedule option
has a real gui, has drag and drop, copy paste
is not a crude hacky front end to some obsure command line app
has command line url adding - to allow adding remotely
basically an enhanced "downloader for x" which unfortunately is no longer maintained and has some nasty bugs
- it cant handle most web redirects
- it cant handle https
- it keeps adding and extra \ after the domain name after each start
i found some sort of "broken" fix for this which breaks downloads of
the form http://domain.com/file_right_here.zip

2) A burning, ripping app that can rip to bin/cue, mdf/mds so we can easily use said images under
windows ala daemon tools ( mixed mode etc ) k3b seems to use its own format brrr
not any more converters thanks , a single working app.

Acid Pro by Sony Media Systems. I'd be thrilled to have it ported, though I have been told on several occasions by folks from Sony that it will never happen. It doesn't run on *nix using Wine/Crossover BTW, before someone suggests I try that route. I'd be happy to pay full price (again) whether it was a native port or Sony made it run using Wine/Crossover.

This is a long thread so I'm sure it'd been said before, but I'd like to see Steam and source engine games ported to Linux, but it appears that won't happen anymore, at least for now. While there tends to be a decent linux equivalent of most windows applications, pretty much any games are welcome to be ported

Virtualbox for ANY Window$ application. I keep it for when I feel lazy about learning howto in Linux.

Install "PlayOnLinux" and you will be able to install all Steam games. Wine application database also states Steam is fully supported.

I would very much like ImgBurn ported over. I'm a huge fan of its simplicity and capability. Also, of that fun tune it plays when it's completed a job successfully

let's shut down this thread

Seriously. We're seeing too many posts about things that Linux already has better alternatives for.

Or people are posting about specialty programs that the vendors can barely support on one operating system -and usually put in locks to make it even more unstable. Leave these jokers to try to derive revenue from their closed source crap.

At this point there is nothing running on Windows that I need ported to Linux. And there are only a few specialty programs like AutoCAD that don't have good Linux equivalents. Crossover Office and Wine have made most of the rest runnable under Linux.

It's time to retire this thread!

No. I vote to keep it going. It can be a launchpad to petition to a company that Linux is worthwhile. It has also helped people find FOSS alternatives to proprietary software.

And proprietary software development is not crap. It's a driving force in the free market. I do hope those 'jokers' get a nice, big revenue from their closed source 'crap'.
