Quickbooks, Quicken, and TurboTax. I don't use them myself, but those seem to stop many people from either migrating at all or at least from migrating completely off of Windows.

Sorry

I see that you're right, Notes IS Availble, but 1-2-3 isn't. I find that a bit odd. Seems there's not much demand for it, bu I agree that there ought be be a linux for for 1-2-3

It's a dealbreaker for me to run Linux. I'm going to have to run Macrocrap indefinitely because I have so much in Lotus spreadsheets. Maybe run Win98 in virtual (VMware?) in a Linux box, even though it's more expense. Wine will load 1-2-3 but chokes when trying to open a file.

My vote is to draft Jonathan Sachs to continue his work on 1-2-3.

I have been using WordPerfect since the days of WordPerfect 4.2. Until fairly recently I was using WordPerfect 5.1 on a machine running DesqView, but when that gave up the ghost I migrated to WordPerfect 12.

Why do I like it? Simply, I have the feeling I am in control all the time. I can split the screen if I want to find what formatting characters are being inserted in my document, something I cannot do in Micro$oft Word or (unless I am missing something) in OpenOffice. Furthermore, the WordPerfect character sets take into account all the diacritical marks I need for European languages; and can be ported between computers and fonts - in my experience, Micro$oft Word gives very uncertain and inconsistent results because the characters are not always mapped to the same place

1-2-3 has the smell of death.

Not odd, 1-2-3 is a dead end product. Soon enough it probably won't be supported on Windows any more either.

Lotus Notes / Domino now uses ODF (Open Office) internally for rich-content documents.

All 1-2-3 users need to start looking for another platform.

I've just downloaded GoOo from http://go-oo.org/download/

I downloaded a number of language support packages, though not Korean, as I don't speak it and am unlikely to learn it now. Good luck!

Camtasia from Techsmith for linux

I've looked at many open source screen casting software for linux but no one can compete with Camtasia so far. I've tried to emulate Camtasia through Wine but it didn't work properly. I need Camatsia for Linux and I'm sure my employer (university) will buy licences for linux if requested from their employees.

So I vote for Camtasia which I use a lot.

I wasn't familiar with either LaTex or Kile, but having just looked them up, they seem to be excellent for what they are designed to do, but far too advanced for me. It is now nearly twenty years since I started using WordPerfect 4.2, and I abandoned it when newer versions came along; but I still have copies of documents edited in older versions of the program, and occasionally I want to refer to those (and possibly even edit them).

Having recently watched an experienced Linux user struggle with a recalcitrant page break, and knowing that this would never normally happen in WordPerfect, I can only repeat my suggestion!!

I agree, especially about WP 5.1, that this is a very good program and indeed one of the last really tight and polished applications we've seen. Perhaps it would be nice to see it in Linux, but part of it's elegance, especially nowadays, is it's low resource requirement. It would actually be a shame to loose some of its best points by porting it to Linux. I would suggest you just take any old computer from the dump and run 5.1 with MS-DOS 6.22, or FreeDOS. I run DOS as my daily user on a P133 (don't laugh) and, although I rarely use it, WP 5.1 is blindlingly fast on even that outdated hardware. If you want to move your WP files to a Linux or MS-WIN machine just use FTP. Without spending any money, and with minimal learning curve, I've solved my DOS to Linux problems. Nothing on my modern Linux machine is, even remotely, as fast as my DOS only box so I'm happy now .

To the person who suggested LaTex: I'm not sure that one could casually learn to use that. Perhaps you already know how, but I've looked at it and it is not easy. I might try again sometime because it truly looks like it is worth some effort.

I Agree that trying to casually learn Latex is a pain. I wish that I could find someone to teach me, and then I think I'd start trying to build a better starting point for people. I know a couple of math people who know Latex, and I'd really like to get that one little thing under my belt. As far as the WP folks, there is/was a linux version, but nobody bought it and Corel has given up on the idea, it seems. Perhaps we need a list of important improvements to openOffice so that we can improve the available product into the feature set.

Also, gnumeric for gnome supports lotus 1-2-3 files, btw.

FTP means File Transfer Protocol. The protocol is independent of the operating system so you can essentially connect to any machine and transfer files back and forth. It is likely built into your browser and you've probably used it to download programs without even noticing. In Linux there is a client allready installed in most distributions and you just type "ftp addresstogoto". The command interface is very simple, consisting of "put", "get", "ls", "cd", and a few other commands. The basic commands are the same in Linux and MS-Windows so it is a protocol worth learning because you can use it anywhere. For our purposes, the simplest is to install the FTP server on your Linux machine and the client on the dos machine, because installation in Linux is trivial and more difficult in DOS. Linux also has a lot of choices when it comes to networking software.

If you are not familiar with FTP, I'm guessing that you are not that familiar with configuring DOS or basic networking. The setup that I describe requires little setup, but if you don't normally work on the command line, ie. you use mostly applications, then you will need some instructions. If you are up for it, I will walk you through it - but not here since we're straying from the Linux focus .

PS: I'm assuming you're using pure DOS and not some "window" in another OS where I won't have any expertise.
