I am running xubuntu with xmbc on it. I have some problems with lirc and I figured that get the lirc to cooperate after the boot if I stop lirc, remove modules ir_lirc_codec, lirc_dev and lirc_serial and restart lirc (letting it to load modules lirc_dev and lirc_serial).
(I do not know where ir_lirc_codec is coming from and if it is one responsible for making the lirc not to work in the first place, but it is blocking the removal of the other lirc modules and apparently I do not need it).
Problem 1: I now removed lirc with update-rc.d from all runlevels - still it is running after boot. What is starting it?
Problem 2: I tried to blacklist that ir_lirc_codec und /etc/modprobe.d/ and other modules which seem to originate from my DVB-S card (hauppauge_ir and such stuff) - I also did update-initramfs -u after that - to no avail they are still there.
if blacklisting doesn't work, you could also remove the modules. But note that there may be any dependencies which require the lirc-modules. Check the output of lsmod in order to find out which other modules depend on the lirc-modules.
Well in fact none because I can remove them after the boot. My problem is that lirc is not working after the normal boot, only if I stop lirc remove the modules and restart lirc (which then automatically loads only the necessary modules, which do not include these ir modules) - somehow the blacklist should do the trick. And then I am still wondering what is it that starts the lirc service as I do not have it anywhere anymore (under /etc/rc*.d) - it should not start automatically.
Well, conflicting modules maybe the reason why lirc doesn't work after booting. I don't have any experience with xmbc, when does xmbc start? also at boot-time? is it possible, that xmbc starts lirc?
You can find out where the lirc-service resides with the command
Code:
whereis lirc
provided that lirc is the name of the binary, if it is a service (on Windows it is called service, on Linux we say a daemon) it may also be named lircd, but I have no experience with this software.
No, I start xbmc "myself" from startup script after autologin. The lirc is running before that already for a longer time. The service resides under /etc/init.d but would be called by /etc/rc3.d/ but I already removed it from the services and yet it is running when the machine runs up. I just don't know where it is started. Maybe some old stuff from mythbuntu which I had on the machine earlier on, but still...
You could rename the module ir_lirc_codec which isn't used (as you described in your posting above). When you rename a module (in the /lib/modules directory, it will be no longer found and therefore not loaded as well. Then check, if lirc is loaded anyway and if so, if it works correct.
